چکیده

A dynamic definition of a first-order phase transition is given. It is based on a master equation description of the time evolution of a system. When the operator generating that time evolution has an isolated near degeneracy there is a first-order phase transition. Conversely, when phenomena describable as first-order phase transitions occur in a system, the corresponding operator has near degeneracy. Estimates relating degree of degeneracy and degree of phase separation are given. This approach harks back to early ideas on phase transitions and degeneracy, but now enjoys greater generality because it involves an operator present in a wide variety of systems. Our definition is applicable to what have intuitively been considered phase transitions in nonequilibrium systems and to problematic near equilibrium cases, such as metastability. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0022-2488~98!01803-9#

Predictive Information in a Nonequilibrium Critical Model

We propose predictive information, that is, information between a long past of duration T and the entire infinitely long future of a time series, as a general order parameter to study phase transitions in physical systems independently of the underlying dynamics. It can be used, in particular, to study nonequilibrium transitions and other exotic transitions, where a simpler order parameter cann...

On the Strength of First Order Phase Transitions

Electroweak baryogenesis may solve one of the most fundamental questions we can ask about the universe, that of the origin of matter. It has become clear in the past few years that it also poses a multi-faceted challenge. In order to compute the tiny primordial baryonic excess, we probably must invoke physics beyond the standard model (an exciting prospect for most people), we must push perturb...

Phase Transitions and Universality in Nonequilibrium Steady States of Stochastic Ising Models

We present results of direct computer simulations and of Monte Carlo renorrealization group (MCRG) studies of the nonequilibrium steady states of a spin system with competing dynamics and of the voter model. The MCRG method, previously used only for equilibrium systems, appears to give useful information also for these nonequilibrium systems. The critical exponents are found to be of Ising type...

Nonequilibrium Dynamics in Low Dimensional Systems

In these lectures we give an overview of nonequilibrium stochastic systems. In particular we discuss in detail two models, the asymmetric exclusion process and a ballistic reaction model, that illustrate many general features of nonequilibrium dynamics: for example coarsening dynamics and nonequilibrium phase transitions. As a secondary theme we shall show how a common mathematical structure, t...

Field-Theory Approaches to Nonequilibrium Dynamics

It is explained how field-theoretic methods and the dynamic renormalisation group (RG) can be applied to study the universal scaling properties of systems that either undergo a continuous phase transition or display generic scale invariance, both near and far from thermal equilibrium. Part 1 introduces the response functional field theory representation of (nonlinear) Langevin equations. The RG...
